Oprah Winfrey is a Renaissance woman. Oprah was born on January 29, 1954. Her name was supposed to be Orpah, but it was misspelled on her birth certificate. Oprah's mother was a teenager when she had Oprah, and was not married either. When she was young, Oprah lived in Mississippi with her grandmother, and at age six, she moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin with her mother. Oprah was sexually abused as a child by male relatives and friends of her mother. At only fourteen, Oprah had a baby boy, but he unfortunately died when he was just over one month old. After this sad experience, she moved to Tennessee with her father. Her father gave her the kind of home life that she needed. He was strict, and made Oprah work her hardest all the time. Oprah won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant when she was seventeen. Oprah got a full scholarship to Tennessee State University. She was a broadcaster, a reporter, and an anchor as a young adult. Oprah co-hosted AM Chicago, and it was later renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1985. Along with having her talk show, Oprah was an actress in multiple movies, including The Color Purple and other movies that she herself had produced. She made O, The Oprah Magazine, and O at Home. Oprah became a billionaire with her media empire. She was the first African-American woman to be a billionaire. Oprah continued to host The Oprah Winfrey Show and had many famous guests. She is a philanthropist, and has done many projects for charity such as building a school in South Africa. Oprah has recently stopped The Oprah Winfrey Show, with it's final episode on Wednesday, May 25, 2011. It had the highest ratings her show had in seventeen years. However, that is not the end of her career. She is starting a new network titled OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. She is sometimes considered to be "the most powerful woman in the world."
