In 2003, Forbes magazine publish a list of America’s billionaires, and named Oprah as the first African-American woman to achieve this. Oprah has put her money to good use helping others. She has also used her various programs, like the Oprah Winfrey Show, to promote charities she supports.
In 2000, Oprah stated the Angel Network, non-profit, volunteer served, public charity, in order to "inspire people and make a difference in the lives of others". Oprah was both the chairman and president of the company. The Network gave awards such as the Kids can free the Children and Use your Life Awards, which was a $100,000 award to those who dedicate their lives to improve the lives of others. Angel Network also gave scholarships to individuals and organizations, and supervised projects for under served communities. These projects provided educational projects, assistance for the disabled and elderly in basic human needs, and regaining their dignity as a community. In addition, it provided grants to charities that were trying to resolve a variety of problems affecting developing countries, such as poverty, child neglect, starvation, disease and homelessness. She has done a lot of work for the children of Africa, building schools (see below video) and providing food. After a Christmas program she filmed in South Africa, she established the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, near Johannesburg (pictured above, right at it's opening ceremony). Angel Network had many major affiliates, such as the Crisis Fund, a funding arm for The Threshold Foundation, UNICEF, the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and Habitat for Humanity. In May 2010, the Charity stopped accepting donations, and closed down shortly after.
